Primary Languages
More than half of developers consider JavaScript as their primary language regardless of occupation. The next two top languages are Python and HTML/CSS. Among professionals and freelancers, however, both JavaScript and Python share the top spot.
It comes to no surprise that the top five primary languages for professionals, JavaScript, Python, PHP, HTML/CSS, and TypeScript, are usually associated with the web. This is reflective of the fact that most of our developers develop websites.
Students almost share the same top five languages, but with TypeScript being replaced with Java. We believe that this is most likely due to the current educational curriculum where Java is a part of, particularly for courses on the object-oriented paradigm.

Language
Web development technologies have dominated the lives of most developers in Eastern Visayas. JavaScript enjoys the top spot as both the most used language and the most desired to be used again this 2024 by developers in the region across all demographics. HTML/CSS, Python, SQL, and PHP are generally the next four most used, but Java sees more than Python among students and the unemployed.
On the other end of the spectrum, Assembly has been reported to be the least liked languages for Eastern Visayas. Visual Basic 6 (or earlier) comes in at second least liked. It is quite interesting to note that this language still sees use in the region, despite the deprecation of its IDE since 2008 and the lack of updates for nearly 30 years.

Framework/Library
Coinciding with the popularity of JavaScript and web development in the region, React has topped the list of frameworks and libraries being used by developers in Eastern Visayas, while also being among the top frameworks/libraries that developers would like to use this 2024. Along with React, the top most used framework/library is mostly held by JavaScript technologies, namely: Node.js, jQuery, and Vue.js. Curiously, the most disliked framework/library is also another JavaScript technology, AngularJS.
Contrasting the professionals/freelancers, whom lean towards using web technologies, students and the unemployed, interestingly, report that .NET is among their top 10 most used frameworks/libraries. This suggests that the .NET framework is possibly taught in higher education.

Tool
Our developers in Eastern Visayas really do love their JavaScript tools. Less than half of respondents stated that they use npm with less than a quarter reporting they use Yarn. Despite the popularity of JavaScript, Docker and Pip have shown notable usage as well, but are not on par with the popularity of npm. Nevertheless, Docker has seen more desire to be used this year than npm itself.
While generally, npm is the most used tool in the region, among students and the unemployed, Composer takes the lead in terms of usage. This suggests that a lot of students have been involved with development using PHP in 2023. However, npm still takes a notable second place and Pip still staying at the top five most used tools. Docker is not as commonly used among students and the unemployed compared to professionals.

IDE/Editor
An overwhelming majority of developers in Eastern Visayas have been using Visual Studio Code last 2023, while also being the IDE/editor that most developers would like to use for this year. This case is true for professionals and students.
Visual Studio, Sublime Text, and Android Studio enjoy the next three most used IDEs/editors by Eastern Visayas. The fifth most used IDE/editor, in general, is PyCharm. However, among professionals and freelancers, this place is taken by Jupyter Notebook/Jupyter. For students and the unemployed, it is taken by Notepad++. Notepad++ also happens to be one of the two most disliked editors, along with RStudio.

Database
MySQL and its fork, MariaDB, are the most used databases in the region. MySQL is also the database that most developers want to use again this 2024. This is true for professionals/freelancers, students, and the unemployed.
SQLite and MongoDB are among the top five used databases. PostgreSQL is generally in the top five as well. However, it is more popular among professionals/freelancers than among students and the unemployed. The latter group reporting that they use Firebase Realtime Database more than PostgreSQL.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the most popular cloud platform in the region as well as being the platform most want to use this year across all demographics. However, Firebase, and Google Cloud Platform are far more popular than AWS among students. Nevertheless, these three are the most popular cloud platforms in Eastern Visayas in 2023.

Work Management and Code Documentation Tools
Google Meet, Facebook Messenger, Discord, Zoom, and Slack are the top five most used communication tools by developers in Eastern Visayas. However, professionals and freelancers use Zoom more than Discord, while the vice versa is the case for students and the unemployed. Additionally, Slack is more popular among professionals and freelancers than among students and the unemployed who use Google Chat more than Slack.
Discord has been reported to be the tool that most developers want to use this year, even surpassing Facebook Messenger.

Communication Tools Used, Loved, and Hated
In Eastern Visayas, Jira has seen the most use among developers, especially among professionals and freelancers, as well as the tool most developers would want to use this 2024. Notion, GitHub Discussions, Trello, and Confluence are also among the top used tools for work management and code documentation.
Among students and the unemployed, a somewhat similar usage is observed. While Jira is still among the top used tool, GitHub Discussions and Notion saw more use than Jira.
